Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 2/3 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup apple cider (reduced for best flavor)
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the coating: 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, and 4 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat and Prep. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 12-count donut pan with non-stick cooking spray or a little bit of butter to ensure the donuts pop out easily after baking.
- Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Ensure there are no large lumps so the spice distribution is even.
- Step 3: Whisk Wet Ingredients. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the egg, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth. Add the apple cider, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Whisk until the ingredients are fully combined.
- Step 4: Combine the Batter. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Use a spatula to fold the mixture together until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the donuts tough.
- Step 5: Fill the Pan. Spoon the batter into the donut pan, filling each cavity about 3/4 of the way full. You can also use a piping bag or a zip-top bag with the corner cut off for a cleaner, more even fill.
- Step 6: Bake the Donuts. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
- Step 7: Add the Coating. While the donuts are still warm, melt the butter for the coating in a small bowl. In another bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon. Dip each donut lightly into the melted butter, then roll it in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated.
