  • Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8-inch square baking pan with butter or non-stick spray, or line it with parchment paper for easy removal later.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and brown sugar until smooth and well combined. Add the egg and vanilla extract, whisking again until the mixture is glossy.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: Using a spatula or wooden spoon, gently stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until just combined; be careful not to overmix the batter or the bars may become tough.
  4. Fold in Mix-ins: Gently fold in the chocolate chips and the chopped pecans until they are evenly distributed throughout the thick dough.
  5. Spread and Bake: Transfer the dough into the prepared baking pan. Use a spatula to spread it into an even layer. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
  6. Cool and Slice: Place the pan on a wire rack and let the bars cool completely before cutting them into squares. This allows the center to set properly for the best texture.
