  • Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 thick slices of bread (Brioche, Challah, or thick-cut white bread)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a wide, shallow bowl or pie dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Ensure the eggs are fully incorporated and the spices are well-distributed throughout the liquid mixture.
  2. Place a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a tablespoon of butter and let it melt until it starts to foam slightly. Swirl the butter around to coat the surface of the pan evenly.
  3. Dip a slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for about 10 to 15 seconds per side. You want the bread to be saturated but not so soggy that it falls apart. Repeat this with as many slices as will fit comfortably in your pan.
  4. Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes on the first side until it is deep golden brown and slightly crispy. Flip the slices and cook for another 3 minutes on the other side.
  5. Once both sides are cooked through and the center of the bread has puffed up slightly, remove the French toast from the pan. Serve immediately while hot with your favorite toppings.
